REBIRTH CHICAGO

Our Leadership Academy empowers students to overcome individual and institutional limitations for the purpose of becoming productive students within the community.

OUR MISSION

Rebirth Chicago’s mission is to provide a safe environment where at-risk adolescents can flourish in an environment that is conducive to learning how to excel in society. Via the use of interactive programs, individuals will obtain the skillsets needed to successfully interact with society.

We are an organization committed to educating young males on the importance of critical-thinking and decision-making. All activities provided will aid in decreasing the number of non-Hispanic males from a life of crime and provide them with the skill sets needed to be productive members of society.

ABOUT US

The standard academic activities performed at the leadership academy are culturally sensitive with an emphasis on critical-thinking, leadership, and conflict resolution.
Professionals with advanced degrees in education, psychology, and behavioral sciences will be conducting many of these academic activities.
All academic activities will be conducted in 12 interactive classrooms where students can share ideas and insights on topics of discussion. The length of each class is 50 minutes.

In addition to the standard academic curriculum, courses on financial literacy (budgeting, saving, investing, retirement), understanding state and federal taxes, consumer credit will be taught. Individuals who have a thorough understanding of financial literacy are less likely to rely on governmental assistance and more likely to become responsible, productive citizens.

Leadership Academy

The Rebirth Chicago Young Black Male Leadership Academy:
A state-of-the-art facility that specializes in building tomorrow’s leaders. As the world advances, what’s being taught in school must advance as well. The basics, reading, writing, and arithmetic have been replaced with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM). It’s not enough to prepare students for post-secondary education when, at any given point in time, they will be faced with making a decision that changes the trajectory of their lives, especially in the black and brown community. In a world where conflict is around every corner, it’s paramount for students to know how to navigate those delicate situations that could have devastating outcomes. The Academy’s mission is to provide a well-rounded student lifestyle utilizing a comprehensive curriculum that prepares them for post-secondary education that goes beyond the books to intentionally incorporate extra-curricular activities that will enhance our students’ socialization skills. In addition, our program provides students with the tools needed to make better choices when confronted with negative situations.

The ability to make the right decision, when needed, could prevent the percentage of high school dropouts and adolescent incarceration, especially in black and brown populations. The first of its kind, the Rebirth Chicago Young Black Male Leadership Academy will incorporate conflict management and resolution courses into the curriculum. Conflict management and resolution courses will be taught by trained professionals. Students will have the ability to discuss events, current and past, and provide input on how conflict management could have been used to change the outcome. Throughout the academic year, students will participate in conflict management role playing while being introduced to techniques that will aid them in making better choices when confronted with disagreements, peer pressure, violence, alcohol, and drugs.
The Rebirth Chicago Young Black Male Leadership Academy will offer two tracks:
College and Trade-bound. The base curriculum is the same for both tracks, however the difference lies in which track the student decides to take. College bound students will participate in dual enrollment and dual credit programs. Students who successfully complete these programs will receive college credit. Upon college acceptance, students could be enrolled as second semester college freshmen. Students who continue to excel, while in college, could graduate earlier. In addition, students on the college-bound track will be introduced to a field of study where black and brown representation is low such as health physics and emergency management.

For students not interested in attending college, the Trade-bound program will expose them lo trades such as electrical, heating and air conditioning, plumbing, welding, and carpentry.

Students will have the ability to apply for apprenticeships in the trade of their choice. The Rebirth Chicago Young Black Male Leadership Academy utilizes a 15:1 teaching ratio. With this ratio, there are a number of benefits, which include the following: stronger teacher/student relationships, engaged leaming, individualized attention, and better overall results for students. With the incorporation of the abovementioned benefits, students are immediately introduced to a community-like learning environment. This type of environment is a key component of the success of our academy.
The Rebirth Chicago Young Black Male Leadership Academy feeder program:
Through collaborative partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and International Trade Associations, students will have the opportunity to see and spend time with subject matter experts. These experts can engage students to get a better understanding of what’s entailed and how to be successful individuals and leaders in their chosen field. Research shows that connectedness is an essential protective factor that promotes the health and well-being of students. The values, being cared for and supported, are important attributes that will ensure that our students have the tools needed to be a viable part of society well beyond their post-secondary educational experience through our academy. Advisors from the Academy, using the principles of connectedness, will follow the success of each graduate and offer guidance when needed.

Its effect can be felt by the community, the family of the individual incarcerated, the victim and their family but more importantly the incarcerated individual. In addition to holding 25% of the world’s total prison population, of the top ten highest incarnation rates, the United States ranks fifth with 539 incarcerated individuals per capita.
